Experienced Counsel for Complex Divorce, Custody, and Financial Matters

Jacquelyn M. Bickar is an experienced family law litigator who has devoted her legal career exclusively to family law. For more than a decade, she has represented clients in complex divorces, high conflict custody disputes, domestic violence proceedings, business valuation matters, and cases involving sophisticated compensation and financial issues.

Jackie is particularly experienced in cases where family dynamics and financial complexity intersect. She represents business owners, executives, professionals, and spouses navigating disputes involving business valuation, characterization and division of equity compensation, support, and other complex marital property issues. In these matters, she regularly works with forensic accountants to analyze competing valuations, evaluate financial assumptions, and develop strategies that protect her clients’ interests.

In one business valuation matter, Jackie retained a consulting forensic expert to challenge the opposing party’s analysis. The case ultimately settled without trial at a business value approximately $500,000 higher than the valuation advanced by the opposing expert.

Deep Experience in Complex Custody Matters

Jackie has extensive experience representing parents in difficult custody disputes, including move away cases, matters involving child custody evaluations, domestic violence, mental health concerns, and disputes involving infants and young children.

She regularly works with child custody evaluators, therapists, and other mental health professionals when a case requires deeper analysis of family dynamics, parental functioning, or a child’s needs. Jackie understands how to translate that professional input into a practical litigation strategy and how to act quickly when a child’s safety or stability may be at risk.

She has represented clients in cases where either parent experiences a significant mental health crisis. When her own client faces such a challenge, Jackie focuses on helping the client respond promptly and responsibly, including obtaining appropriate professional support and documenting the steps being taken to stabilize the situation. When the other parent’s condition raises legitimate safety concerns, Jackie knows how to move quickly to seek emergency relief, obtain relevant information, and advocate for safeguards designed to protect the children.

Jackie also has substantial experience with move away cases. In one contested matter, she represented a mother seeking to relocate several hours away with her two daughters after the father, who had historically exercised limited parenting time, opposed the move. The case proceeded through a custody assessment and trial, and Jackie successfully obtained an order allowing the mother to relocate with the children.

As a mother of three young children, Jackie also understands that custody cases are not theoretical. Parenting schedules, school decisions, medical needs, transitions between homes, and developmental stages all affect whether a parenting plan actually works. That perspective gives her additional empathy for parents while helping her remain focused on practical solutions that serve the children’s best interests.

Jackie has successfully represented both survivors of domestic violence seeking protection and individuals defending against false allegations of abuse. She understands how quickly these allegations can affect custody, parenting time, and the overall direction of a family law case, and approaches them with careful preparation, sound judgment, and close attention to the evidence.

A Seasoned Trial Lawyer Who Knows How to Resolve Cases

Jackie has been first chairing family law trials for more than ten years. Her trial experience includes move away disputes, date of separation, business valuation, domestic violence restraining orders, and complex retirement issues.

Yet Jackie does not measure effectiveness by how often a case reaches trial. She successfully resolves the substantial majority of her cases and brings formal mediation training to every matter she handles. Her experience as both a litigator and mediator allows her to identify opportunities for resolution without sacrificing leverage or her client’s objectives.

Her philosophy is that strong advocacy does not require unnecessary conflict. Jackie is known for being prepared, organized, professional, and reasonable while remaining firm about the issues that matter. She understands how to use litigation strategically while continuing to look for opportunities to reach a result that serves the client’s long term interests.

Clear Guidance Through a Difficult Process

Jackie takes particular pride in making clients feel heard and supported. She understands that family law requires more than identifying legal issues. Clients need an attorney who listens carefully enough to understand what is driving the dispute and who can then give candid advice about which positions are realistic, which battles matter, and how to move the case forward.
She is particularly effective in high pressure situations where circumstances change quickly and the client needs calm, decisive guidance. Jackie’s goal is to bring structure to an unstable situation, identify the immediate legal priorities, and develop a strategy that protects both the client’s short term position and long term objectives.

Honors & Recognition

Jackie was selected to the Northern California Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers in 2023 and 2024.

She earned her J.D. from California Western School of Law and her B.A. in Political Science and English from Saint Mary’s College of California. During law school, she was recognized through the Pro Bono Honors Society and received the Distinguished Advocate award.

Community Involvement

Jackie volunteered for several years with Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, supporting individuals and families affected by domestic violence.

She has also been affiliated with the Santa Clara County Bar Association and San Diego County Bar Association.
