How to Prepare for a Virtual Hearing

With the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, pre-pandemic life is slowly returning back to normal. However, we still have a long way until everyone will be able to receive it. Therefore, in the time being, we can expect to continue doing many things virtually, including court hearings for your divorce.

Any kind of court hearing can be a bit intimidating, and you might find the prospect of a virtual hearing to be challenging in its own unique way. With this in mind, here are some tips to help you prepare well for your virtual hearing.

Check your hardware:

Make sure you have the proper equipment to run the meeting smoothly. Ideally, you will be on a computer rather than a phone, and you should have a stable internet connection. If you don’t have the proper equipment at your home, make arrangements to go somewhere that will enable you to access the meeting without worrying about a crash.

Eliminate distractions:

Access the meeting from a place in your home where you can block off children and pets and where you can easily eliminate distractions. You want a quiet place where there won’t be people trying to talk to you or walking in the background of your video. This is still a professional setting so you’ll want to keep it as such.

Act like you’re in Court:

Even if your meeting isn’t technically in Court, you should still act as though it is. Dress professionally, be cordial, and come prepared with all the information you need. You should also dress appropriately for Court

Prepare with your attorney:

Talk with your attorney in advance of the meeting about what you can expect out of a virtual hearing and how the two of you will communicate remotely about issues related to the hearing on that day.
